Concrete barriers to improve CBD safety

Posted On June 14, 2017

New safety barriers are being installed at key landmarks across the Melbourne CBD in order to help protect locals and visitors to the city.

The Andrews Labor Government and City of Melbourne have started installing the temporary concrete blocks in Bourke Street Mall and along the northern edge of Federation Square. Over the coming weeks, concrete barriers will be installed at other sites around the city to restrict vehicle access and boost security at some of Melbourne’s most popular areas.

The sites have been identified by Victoria Police based on levels of foot traffic, public gatherings and significance to Melbourne.

For security reasons, the location of these additional barriers will be announced as they are installed.

They are the latest in a range of initiatives flagged by the Labor Government to better protect Victoria from terrorism incidents and senseless acts of violence like the Bourke Street tragedy earlier this year.

Acting Lord Mayor Arron Wood said the State Government is working closely with the Victorian Police on this project.

“We will continue to work closely with Victoria Police and the State Government to make sure Melbourne has the best possible security response to whatever threat may arise.

“These works will help increase the safety and security of Melbourne’s public spaces, and give people confidence to go about their business in the city.”

The Labor Government will continue to work with Melbourne City Council and Victoria Police to replace the temporary barriers with a network of permanent or retractable bollards funded with $10 million in the Victorian Budget 2017/18.
