New train order set to improve rail infrastucture and guarantee jobs in Ballarat

Posted On September 13, 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is aiming to stabilise the future of manufacturing in Ballarat with plans that will help increase the capacity of Melbourne’s rail system and provide jobs for the region.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan, Member for Wendouree Sharon Knight and Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard today revealed a new order of nine new ‘X’Trapolis’ trains that will be manufactured by  the local business Alstom in Ballarat today.

19 six-car X’Trapolis trains have been ordered from local manufacturer Alstom since the Labor Government came to office, totalling more than 300 million of work for the region.

This new 54 carriage order comes as a key piece of the Government’s plans to facilitate a pipeline of sustainable, local train and tram building and maintenance work around Victoria.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan spoke of the planned works, stating ““We’re getting on with improving public transport, building the infrastructure we need like the Metro Tunnel and new trains, to keep Victoria moving.”

“We’re guaranteeing local jobs at Alstom in Ballarat and the broader supply chain in Victoria.”

The first X’Trapolis train is currently expected to become operational and in service by mid-2018, following the delivery of existing orders underway, with delivery of the final train suggested to be in early 2019.

The total number of X’Trapolis trains on Melbourne’s network will be 101 after the work has been completed.

Furthermore, the Government has spent $15 million of its 2016/17 budget in refurbishing and converting the three train-sets of five carriages into four-train sets of four carriages on the Albury line.

This conversion aims to drastically improve reliability and furnish the carriages to make them more comfortable for passengers.
