Early works on the Metro Tunnel begin

Posted On September 23, 2016

Acting Premier and Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan has today attended the project’s first worksite in Domain today, revealing that works to enable the project are underway for the $10.9 billion project.

These initial undertakings are part of the ‘Metro Tunnel early works project’, which was secured by John Holland in June of this year.

Up to 100 services will be relocated and protected as part of the early works package.  The main part of the early works package is the excavation of 11 storey shafts next to Swanston ST, which will eventually provide access to multiple new city stations.

The works on the station shafts are set to begin in early 2017. The works will require the excavation of 34 Olympic sized swimming pools worth of soil and rock, and will be 35 metres deep.

The early works project is set to cost up to $324 million.

A Request for Proposal has also been released for the $6 billion main works part of the project, with three bidders shortlisted for the works.

The works come at a pivotal time, with overcrowding becoming a much more prominent issue on Victorian rail lines.  Figures have shown that peak services on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line were 9% more overcrowded in 2016 than the previous year.

Acting Premier Jacinta Allan spoke of the planned works and their importance to Victoria, whilst applying pressure on Malcolm Turnbull to commit to more funding.

“The Metro Tunnel is fully funded, fully planned, and work has begun.”

“This is Australia’s most important public transport project, freeing up space on our busiest lines and allowing us to run more trains, more often, all over Melbourne.”

“Malcolm Turnbull should keep his promise to Victorians and help us deliver even more critical transport infrastructure. You can’t have one rule for New South Wales, and a different one for Victoria.”
