Oberon High School relocation plans detailed

Posted On October 5, 2016

A new, modern school is set to be built in the new Armstrong Creek Education Facility.

Minister for Education James Merlino today visited the soon to be precinct to announce the relocation of Oberon High School and witnessed workers pouring concrete to mark the start of the construction for the new P-6 primary school and P-12 special school that will open there in 2018.

The relocation of Oberon High School came after review findings were announced in regards to education in Geelong.

The review took a close look at the existing local government secondary schools in Geelong’s south, which includes Belmont High School, Oberon High School and Grovedale College.

The review looked at whether or not the aforementioned school would have sufficient space to cater for future enrolments, including the extra demand expected to come from nearby Armstrong Creek, where it is expected up to 7,000 extra students would need to be catered for by 2036.

Minister for Education James Merlino spoke about the review’s findings and the need for the relocation.

“Oberon High School’s new home at Armstrong Creek will give local families access to the first-class facilities they deserve and meet the growing demand for great local secondary schools in the area.”

“We will work with families through the transition to the new school site to make sure they are kept informed and get the support they need during the school’s relocation.”

The Community Reference Group  that played a major part in the review strongly support the relocation Oberon High School and the Andrews Labor Government will now prioritise funding in future state budgets for the relocation.

Currently there are 42 schools in the construction pipeline, thanks to the Government’s $1.8 billion commitment to education.
