Melbourne's Inner City school plans progress to next stage

Posted On October 11, 2016

Up to 5,000 extra student places will be available in Melbourne’s inner city thanks to plans to build 4 new schools in the area.

The Docklands School Provision Review was released to the public today, as well as the State Government revealing Stage 2 of the Inner City Schools Package after deliberation of the findings in the review.

As part of Stage 2, a new primary school will be constructed in Docklands. The Government is already working on sorting out the land needed for the Docklands School.

Initial planning works have also begun in regards to a new primary and secondary school to be located in Fishermans Bend, as well as another primary school in North Melbourne.

Thanks to Victoria’s growing population, up to 9,000 students will need schools in the inner city area in the next 5 years.

So far to date, the Andrews Government has already committed up to $1.8 billion to building 42 schools as well as revitalisation works on a number of schools across Victoria in order to satisfy the growing demands of enrolment.

Stage 2 of the Inner city Schools Package will also include the follow works:

  • Delivering the remaining funding needed for South Melbourne Park Primary School and Prahran High School
  • Open the new Richmond High School and Ferrars Street Primary School in 2018.

Minister for Education James Merlino spoke of the planned education works.

“Melbourne is one of the world’s most liveable cities and we are making sure it remains that way by building new schools and upgrading existing schools for families in the inner city.”

The Government also announced that the principal of Ferrars Street Primary School is going to be appointed 12 months before the school opens, so local families and students can start building relationships and guiding the future of the school before it is officially opened.

Inner city enrolment boundaries are also going to be expanded so families living in the Docklands will be able to send their children to the schools in South Melbourne.
