Monash University Clayton set for $45 million Theatre redevelopment

Posted On August 24, 2016

Steve Herbert, Minister for Training and Skills has today announced that Monash University’s Alexander Theatre is set for a $45 million redevelopment project.

The $45 million was comprised via various funding sources- Monash University has contributed $25 million to the project, whilst the Ian Potter and Monash Foundation have contributed $5 million each.

As recognition of the Ian Potter Foundations’ generous donation, the Alexandre Theatre will be renamed to the Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts following construction. The final $10 million was provided by the Andrews Labor Government as part of the 2016/17 Victorian Budget.

Monash University is recognised as an integral cultural and community asset for south-east Melbourne. Member for Oakleigh Steve Dimopoulos is excited by the re-development stating “This Government is an avid supporter of the Arts, and I look forward to a cultural precinct at the Clayton campus and the opportunities it will provide for the vast number of schools, local arts and cultural groups in my electorate of Oakleigh.”

Monash are hoping that as a result of the establishment of a world class entertainment precinct that visitor numbers to the south-east university will increase to over 1 million per year.

Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert described the project as not just “a win for the staff and students of Monash University; it’s a win for the local community who will also have access to the facilities.”

The facilities will host a multitude of events, such as world class performers, ranging down to student created ensembles.

As part of the project seating will be increased to 586 seats and feature a 200-seat Jazz club and a 130-seat Sound Gallery.

The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts is expected to open in early 2018, with other venues in the precinct to follow at a later date.
