Revitalising Regions and Reshaping Community Engagement at upcoming Victorian Conference

When the Victorian Major Projects Conference returns for its 10th edition in late November, the scope of projects discussed will extend far beyond Melbourne’s CBD, incorporating updates on projects set to boost jobs for Victoria as a whole.

The Regional Rail Revival program is one such project set to be showcased at the conference. Rolled out by Rail Projects Victoria (RPV), the program will upgrade every regional passenger train line in the state from Bendigo to Warrnambool.

Regional Rail Revival Director Mark Havryluk will present on the $1.75 billion program. Havryluk will explore its function as a critical step towards delivering the Victorian Government’s Regional Network Development Plan, while shedding light on the wide-ranging set of skills required to bring the project to fruition successfully.

Mildura City Council’s Mildura Future Ready plan shares a similar complexity to the Regional Rail Revival program, though on a more locale-specific scale.

The Council’s General Manager of Community Martin Hawson will take the stage to present on the plan, which brings together four major projects for equal-priority funding and implementation: Mildura Passenger Rail Services, Mildura South Regional Sporting Precinct, Mildura Motorsports & Community Precinct, and Mildura Riverfront Redevelopment – Stage 2.

Mildura Future Ready aims to target key issues facing the locale, which suffers from low population growth and high unemployment while being isolated from the rest of Victoria due to limited public transport options. Hawson will unpack Mildura City Council’s plans to future-proof the locale while diversifying its economy and the opportunities available to community members working in the infrastructure sector.

The role of community engagement in influencing the success of a major project will round out the conference, with a panel of researchers and communications/engagement leaders from Victoria’s largest infrastructure projects zeroing in on community expectations.

Experts including Tony Clark of the Victorian Health & Human Services Building Authority, Mandi Davidson from RPS Australia Asia Pacific, and Major Roads Projects Victoria’s Trent Woodberry will explore what effective community consultation looks like in a Victorian context.

Mixed in with hours of networking sessions, the 10th Annual Victorian Major Projects Conference will work to advance knowledge and form connections between major projects stakeholders, helping move city and regions alike towards a prosperous future.
