Architect selected for Swan Street Bridge redevelopment

Posted On September 6, 2016

The Swan Street Bridge is inching closer to its redevelopment after the Andrews Labor Government revealed that an architect has been chosen to take control of the project.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan revealed that BKK Architects have won the contract for the architectural design of the revamped Swan Street Bridge.

The bridge will be on the receiving end of a $30million overhaul thanks to funding from the Andrews Government.  Part of the upgrades will include an extra lane for traffic being installed as well as a new separated path to be shared by cyclists and people walking on either side of the bridge.

Three companies have currently been shortlisted to provide tenders for the project;

  • BMD
  • Cut & Fill
  • Seymour White

It is expected that a final decision on the contract will be made by the close of the year, with the Government hoping for construction to start during the middle of 2017.

The new bridge will serve to link the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sidney Myer Music Bowl and the Shrine of Remembrance with the Rod Laver Arena, AAMI Park, Hisense Arena and the MCG, Swan Street Bridge and has been described as a gateway to one of the world’s best sporting and entertainment precincts.

When finished, the upgrade will diminish traffic congestion, improve safety, and facilitate greater access to the sports and entertainment precinct.
